The arithmetic and algebra Contemporary Mathematics and Introductory Statistics assume: percents, signs, formulas, equations, proportions, roots, inequalities, and lines.

  1. 1Fractions, decimals, and percentsThe same amount can be written three ways.
  2. 2Signed numbers and order of operationsThe sign and the order both change the answer.
  3. 3Substituting into a formulaA formula is a sentence. Replace each letter, then calculate.
  4. 4Solving a linear equationDo the same thing to both sides until the letter stands alone.
  5. 5Proportions and percent sentencesTwo ratios that name the same comparison can be cross-multiplied.
  6. 6Exponents and square rootsAn exponent counts repeated multiplication. A square root undoes a square.
  7. 7InequalitiesKeep both sides in step, and flip the sign when you multiply or divide by a negative.
  8. 8Slope, intercept, and graphsA straight line is y = mx + b. m is the slope. b is the y-intercept.
