Population and Community Ecology
When resources become limiting, populations follow a logistic growth curve in which population size will level off at the carrying capacity
Practice this chapterWhen resources become limiting, populations follow a logistic growth curve in which population size will level off at the carrying capacity Life tables are useful to calculate life expectancies of individual population members.
Survivorship curves show the number of individuals surviving at each age interval plotted versus time Populations are individuals of a species that live in a particular habitat.
ecology — the study of the relationships among living organisms and their environment. carrying capacity — the maximum number of individuals of a population that can be supported by the limited resources of a habitat. survivorship curve — a graph of the number of surviving population members versus the relative age of the member. life table — a table showing the life expectancy of a population member based on its age.
Worked example
What does “ecology” mean in Population and Community Ecology?
- 1Use the wording this chapter gives for ecology.
- 2The book says: the study of the relationships among living organisms and their environment.
- 3Do not use the meaning of carrying capacity. That term means the maximum number of individuals of a population that can be supported by the limited resources of a habitat.
Result: the study of the relationships among living organisms and their environment
Why. That is the meaning this chapter gives for ecology.
Do not swap ecology and carrying capacity. ecology means the study of the relationships among living organisms and their environment. carrying capacity means the maximum number of individuals of a population that can be supported by the limited resources of a habitat.
