Lesson 124 of 1524
The Integumentary System
The epidermis is composed of keratinized, stratified squamous epithelium.
Practice this chapterThe epidermis is composed of keratinized, stratified squamous epithelium. The skin and its accessory structures make up the integumentary system , which provides the body with overall protection.
The deeper layer of skin is well vascularized (has numerous blood vessels). Although you may not typically think of the skin as an organ, it is in fact made of tissues that work together as a single structure to perform unique and critical functions.
integumentary system — skin and its accessory structures. skin — made of multiple layers of cells and tissues, which are held to underlying structures by connective tissue ( Figure 5.2 ). dermis — layer of skin between the epidermis and hypodermis, composed mainly of connective tissue and containing blood vessels, hair follicles, sweat glands, and other structures. keratin — type of structural protein that gives skin, hair, and nails its hard, water-resistant properties.
Be able to identify the components of the integumentary system; describe the layers of the skin and the functions of each layer; identify and describe the hypodermis and deep fascia.
Worked example
What does “integumentary system” mean in The Integumentary System?
- 1Use the wording this chapter gives for integumentary system.
- 2The book says: skin and its accessory structures.
- 3Do not use the meaning of skin. That term means made of multiple layers of cells and tissues, which are held to underlying structures by connective tissue ( Figure 5.2 ).
Result: skin and its accessory structures
Why. That is the meaning this chapter gives for integumentary system.
Do not swap integumentary system and skin. integumentary system means skin and its accessory structures. skin means made of multiple layers of cells and tissues, which are held to underlying structures by connective tissue ( Figure 5.2 ).
