Lesson 127 of 1524

The Appendicular Skeleton

This consists of two bones, the scapula and clavicle ( Figure 8.3 ).

Practice this chapter

This consists of two bones, the scapula and clavicle ( Figure 8.3 ). The clavicle (collarbone) is an S-shaped bone located on the anterior side of the shoulder.

The lateral end of the clavicle articulates (joins) with the scapula just above the shoulder joint. The bones that attach each upper limb to the axial skeleton form the pectoral girdle (shoulder girdle).

clavicle — collarbone; elongated bone that articulates with the manubrium of the sternum medially and the acromion of the scapula laterally. pectoral girdle — shoulder girdle; the set of bones, consisting of the scapula and clavicle, which attaches each upper limb to the axial skeleton. scapula — shoulder blade bone located on the posterior side of the shoulder. clavicle (collarbone) — an S-shaped bone located on the anterior side of the shoulder.

Be able to describe the bones that form the pectoral girdle; list the functions of the pectoral girdle; identify the divisions of the upper limb and describe the bones in each region.

Worked example

What does “clavicle” mean in The Appendicular Skeleton?

  1. 1Use the wording this chapter gives for clavicle.
  2. 2The book says: collarbone; elongated bone that articulates with the manubrium of the sternum medially and the acromion of the scapula laterally.
  3. 3Do not use the meaning of pectoral girdle. That term means shoulder girdle; the set of bones, consisting of the scapula and clavicle, which attaches each upper limb to the axial skeleton.

Result: collarbone; elongated bone that articulates with the manubrium of the sternum medially and the acromion of the scapula laterally

Why. That is the meaning this chapter gives for clavicle.

Do not swap clavicle and pectoral girdle. clavicle means collarbone; elongated bone that articulates with the manubrium of the sternum medially and the acromion of the scapula laterally. pectoral girdle means shoulder girdle; the set of bones, consisting of the scapula and clavicle, which attaches each upper limb to the axial skeleton.
