Gene expression in prokaryotes is mostly regulated at the transcriptional level (some epigenetic and post-translational regulation is also present), whereas in eukaryotic cells, gene expression is regulated at the… While all somatic cells within an organism contain the same DNA, not all cells within that organism express the same proteins.

To express a protein, the DNA is first transcribed into RNA, which is then translated into proteins, which are then targeted to specific cellular locations. In eukaryotic cells, transcription occurs in the nucleus and is separate from the translation that occurs in the cytoplasm.

gene expression — processes that control the turning on or turning off of a gene. DNA — first transcribed into RNA, which is then translated into proteins, which are then targeted to specific cellular locations. epigenetic — heritable changes that do not involve changes in the DNA sequence. post-translational — control of gene expression after a protein has been created.

Worked example

What does “gene expression” mean in Gene Expression?

  1. 1Use the wording this chapter gives for gene expression.
  2. 2The book says: processes that control the turning on or turning off of a gene.
  3. 3Do not use the meaning of DNA. That term means first transcribed into RNA, which is then translated into proteins, which are then targeted to specific cellular locations.

Result: processes that control the turning on or turning off of a gene

Why. That is the meaning this chapter gives for gene expression.

Do not swap gene expression and DNA. gene expression means processes that control the turning on or turning off of a gene. DNA means first transcribed into RNA, which is then translated into proteins, which are then targeted to specific cellular locations.
